How to Get the Most from It

Learn the sound of each character, not dots and dashes on paper. That is why the character speed starts at 20 words per minute: at that speed a letter is one sound you recognize, like a word. The overall speed adds space between letters so you have time to think; shrink that space as you improve.

The Koch method, the first practice set, is the most popular way to learn from scratch. Start with two characters. When you copy 90% or better, add the next one. It feels slow at first and turns out to be fast.

Ten or fifteen minutes a day does more than an hour once a week. When a letter trips you up, don’t stop to think; write a dash and keep going. That habit is what makes copying on the air possible.
